Recently appointed onto the West Midlands Young Combined Authority Board, Dion is passionate about mental health awareness and is pushing for more to be done within education and the workplace.
A young woman wants to change how mental health policy is dealt with in the workplace and in education her new role.
Dion Fanthom, aged 23, from Wolverhampton, was announced as one of the first representatives for the new West Midlands Youth Combined Authority Board.
After 120 young people applied, she is one of over 30 to be chosen to represent the views of young people in the region.
The West Midlands Combined Authority, fronted by Mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street, launched the board to give a voice to young people who often feel they are not being represented by those in power.
They are working in partnership with Beatfreeks, based in Birmingham, who work to empower young people.
Dion, who currently works as a digital marketing executive at the Ramada Resort Park Hall Wolverhampton, has always had a passion for youth empowerment and mental health, she hopes that this new role will allow her to combine her passions.
She said: “I want to change how mental health is dealt with in education and in the workplace, this was a big part of my application. I’d like to recommend methods of support, especially for people going through things like GCSEs, to strengthen what’s out there now.” The Young Board will serve in their positions for the next year.
They will be hare having their first official meeting next week.
Dion hopes that becoming a spokesperson for other young people will help her achieve her long term goals.
She added: “I love my job in digital marketing, alongside it I want to be able to give back in some way and become an advocate and spokesperson for mental health issues.”
“In the future I’m planning on writing a book about this, I’d love to create resources for schools and workplaces too. My experience will go hand in hand with this.”
